FILIPINO HERITAGE FESTIVAL AND GALERIE JOAQUIN PRESENT 'LEGACIES' ART EXHIBITION AT POWER PLANT MALL ON MAY 16 TO 20
May is National Heritage Month, bringing awareness to the immensity of Philippine art and culture. In the visual arts in particular, the country has a long and rich history of immense talents recognized the world over. These extraordinary visual artists are afforded appreciation from a grateful nation in the form of the title of National Artist for Visual Arts and the awarding of the Presidential Medal of Merit. These unique individuals are representative of the achievements of Philippine visual arts—with long and distinguished careers and practices.
For this year's National Heritage Month, the Filipino Heritage Festival has partnered with the esteemed Galerie Joaquin in organizing an exhibition honoring the legacy of these individuals. Entitled 'Legacies,' the exhibition will be on display at the North Court from May 16-17 and at Archaeology from May 18-20, of the Power Plant Mall, Rockwell Center, Makati City. There will be an opening reception on May 16, Wednesday, at 6:30 in the evening. Featuring the works of National Artists Federico Aguilar Alcuaz, Arturo Luz, H.R. Ocampo, and Abdulmari Imao and Presidential Medal of Merit Award Winners Mauro Malang and Juvenal Sanso, 'Legacies' is a fascinating survey of the practices of artists that have served to define the legacy of Philippine visual art.

The exhibition is the perfect way to experience the best works of revered masters in Philippine art. National Artist Federico Aguilar Alcuaz is represented by works from his 'Still Life' series of still life abstractions. His usage of tonal values and perspective, abstracted into their basic components, demonstrates the exceptional technique of the late artist. National Artist Arturo Luz's purer abstractions – and his minimal usage of lines, shapes, and forms – are seen in his 'Two Cyclists,' a part of his larger series of cyclists and carnival performers. Abstraction continues in the fascinating puzzle and flame shapes of National Artist H.R. Ocampo.
National Artists Abulmari Imao takes a different route, revelling in his characteristic usage of Philippine Islamic motifs in simple shapes and forms. His 'Sarimanok' series of paintings and metal sculptures uses a recurring 'naga' serpent-cum-bird motif common among the folk art of Southeast Asian cultures. Presidential Medal of Merit Award Winner Juvenal Sanso, the internationally recognized Spanish-Filipino artist, continues his alluring landscapes. His Breton boats and houses demonstrates Sanso's inclination towards the breathtaking views of seascapes and landscapes, particularly those found in Europe. His use of sunny and bright colors is an evolution from his 'Black Period' works of gloomy motifs showing growth in his practice.
'Legacies' present the art-loving community a fantastic opportunity to view the best of Philippine art. But more than that, 'Legacies' is a way for the public in general to learn about the heritage of the masters of this country's art—a chance to participate in the historical importance of one of Asia's most prolific visual arts nations.
