“Galerie Joaquin Presents “Contemporary Chronicles” at the New Wing of Power Plant Mall

By Grace A. Ng

Galerie Joaquin brings together eight (8) artists, celebrating excellence in craftsmanship, happening at the New Wing of Power Plant Mall, Makati City. The exhibition’s roster of artists focuses on the transpiring emergence of the contemporary genre in the Philippine art scene.

The participating artists’ practice embraces a conscious nod to the past while employing contemporary trends. Pivoting between the past and the present, the works in “Contemporary Chronicles” intend to create a poetic dialog between the traditional and the experimental. The exhibit’s intention is to take the viewer to a place or situation where they can be engaged with and interested enough to get into a creative and abstracted thought process.

While performing quotidian activities, we continually scan the environment or the situation. Through connections found within these encounters, the works displayed are presented in a territory where fact and fiction are blurred for the viewers. The intention is to create universal commonalities out of the polar opposites by employing historical, cultural and social references. These references and symbols open a path for the audience to participate and interpret. It is therefore the goal of the exhibit to offer the audience chances to undertake a further search for meaning beyond initial interpretations.

These artists are visual storytellers. Their work weaves personal and cultural geography to confront the society’s relationship to equity and memory. They intend to contribute to creating a more inclusive society through their interdisciplinary projects that examine and engage with urgent contemporary topics.

Galerie Joaquin showcases its contemporary masterpieces with works by Aileen Lanuza, Eufemio Rasco, Jaspher Penuliar, Jerry Morada, Julmard Vicente, Reybert Ramos, Vince De Pio, and Jef Cablog at the New Wing of The Power Plant Mall in Makati City from October 1 to 15, 2018.
