ARTS of the NEW MOON: Celebrating the Year of the Robust Earth Pig

Exhibit Runs Feb 1-8 at the New Wing of the Power Plant Mall

According to tales and legends, the beginning of Chinese New Year started with the fight against a mythical beast called the "Year." The "Year" looked like an ox with the head of a lion, and was believed to inhabit the sea. On the night of New Year's Eve, the "Year" would come out to harm animals, people, and their properties. Eventually, people discovered that the "Year" feared the color red, fire, and loud sounds. Therefore, for self-protection, people formed the habits of posting red Dui Lian (rhyming couplet pair of lines of verse written vertically down the sides of a doorway) in front of their houses, launching fireworks, and hanging lanterns at year end. Today, Chinese New Year celebrants still do those things: wear red, affix red paper to their doors and lintels, and set off fireworks, and this holiday has been about the importance of family and sharing blessings and abundance with loved ones.

2019 is the year of the Earth Pig. In Chinese culture, pigs are the symbol of wealth. Their chubby faces and big ears are signs of good fortune. The Earth Pig is great at organizing events and gatherings and will be able to pull out all the stops on the tightest schedule. Those born in the Year of the Pig have a large circle of friends due to their great sense of humor.

For “ARTS of the NEW MOON”, Ram Mallari will be exhibiting some of his steampunk sculptures including a pig-themed piece. A Michael Cacnio red piggy bank sculpture will also be on display during this exhibit, along with red glass sculptures by Marge Organo. Other participating artists will be exhibiting representative works containing auspicious symbols and colors.

The exhibition offers a unique and enthusiastic insight into the vitality, originality and richness of the Chinese culture and its influence in the modern milieu.
