“Vernacular Façades” by Edwin Tres Reyes on view at Galerie Joaquin BGC

Exhibit runs July 8 to 17

Edwin Tres Reyes’ “Vernacular Façades” depicts the historical style establishments common throughout the local architectural landscape in Philippine history. The narrow-terraced buildings utilize its ground floor as a trading post, with the upper floor habituated as living quarters. Tres Reyes intends to illustrate the importance of these heritage buildings with their vibrant representation of conventional hard work and diligence.

The houses’ decorative style is reminiscent of Spanish and Chinese influences, flanked with highly recognized classical details such as decorative Capiz windows, painted shutters, and sloped roof design. The natural environment around the premises completes the charm of Tres Reyes’ envisioned community.

For the artist, the bustling shophouses serve as a historical source of delight and nostalgia. The paintings portray notions of synergy brought about by communal living-- where its residents connect, function, and thrive. “Vernacular Façades” hopes to facilitate the development of architectural conservation, the preservation of urban and social history, and the promotion of harmonious cultural hybridity.

Edwin Tres Reyes studied Architecture and Fine Arts Fine Arts at the University of Santo Tomas.
